Mozart wrote The Magic Flute in 1791, just after the French Revolution and just before he died. Haydn had introduced Mozart to Freemasonry, and the opera is full of the ideas (the autonomy of the individual, self-determination, appalling sexism), the ideals (power, wisdom, beauty), and the symbols (aprons, hammers, compasses, a pyramid with an all-seeing eye) of the Masons.
The Magic Flute Music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. protected by the magic flute. Papageno tries to hang himself on a tree but is saved by the three spirits, who remind him that if he. Papagena appears and the two start making family plans (Duet: Pa-pa-pa-pageno!). The Queen of the Night, her three ladies, and Monostatos attack the temple.
Papageno uses another way to summon Papagena and she appears. They sing their duet about being married, being happy, and having many children.9 The opera set that we see here, however, consists of a rundown grey building, much like many that one can see in the East Berlin in the film, indeed, like the ones past which Philipp was just pushing his cart (see figs. 2 and 3).
The profoundly serious theme of the opera is countered with witty and comical, light-hearted moments, such as when Papageno meets his counterpart, Papagena, after she has been magically transformed into a beautiful young woman and they sing a resonant call-and-response duet, comically popping their notes like birds in a ritual dance.
